Yuliia Starodubtseva (Ukraine) continues with her perfect performance at the WTA 1000 China Open and qualified for the quarter-finals. The Ukrainian tennis player eliminated the tenth-seeded Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) by 2-0 (7:5, 6:0) in 1:36 hours of play.
Anna Kalinskaya was the first to make a break in the match already in the third game, but Yuliia Starodubtseva rebroke immediately and equalized to 2:2. The Ukrainian played saved two break points in the ninth game, but did not give any other opportunities to her Russia opponent. On the other hand, Yuliia Starodubtseva received two break points in the 12th game and converted the second, thus winning the set by 7:5.
Yuliia Starodubtseva did not give a single game to her opponent in the second set, but this doesn’t mean she have no problems. Two of her serving games passes through deuces and in the one of them even gave two breakpoints to Anna Kalinskaya. However, the Ukrainian player succeeded to win all her service games and recorded three breaks to close the set at 6:0.
In the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open, Yuliia Starodubtseva will face the winner between Cori Coco Gauff (USA) and Naomi Osaka (Japan).
Earlier in the day, Paula Badosa (Spain) brought another surprise, eliminating second-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:0) in only 64 minutes of play. In the next round, she will face Shuai Zhang (China), who eliminated 23rd-seeded Magdalena Frech (Poland) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:2).
