The new high jump world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine), who earlier today cleared 210cm to break Stefka Kostadinova’s 37-year-old world record of 209cm, was overjoyed with her success at the Paris Diamond League.
“I feel fantastic because it was an incredible jump and I was able to do it on my first try. It was really amazing, especially since I only jumped 207cm on my second attempt and it was already my personal best. My coach told me that maybe I should stop because the Olympics are coming up – of course that’s more important, but inside I felt that I could do it, and to be honest, I wanted to try for the world record – and I did on my first try”, said Yaroslava Mahuchikh after winning the gold at the Paris Diamond League and breaking the world record in the high jump. “Of course we did a lot of work with my coaches, a lot of hard work, also to recover from a small injury before the European Championships. Now that I’m healthy, I’m ready to fight and I’ve broken the world record here in Paris, where people are very supportive. I’m looking forward to the Olympics here. I’m sure it will be a great race and an even better atmosphere – but I know it will be tough and very competitive. At a big event like the Olympics you really have to be mentally strong and as my coach says, it’s a holiday and you should definitely enjoy it”, added she after the race in Paris.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh is a Ukrainian high jumper and women’s high jump world record holder. She was the Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medalist, 2019 and 2022 World Championships silver medalist, 2023 World Championships gold medalist, 2022 World Indoor Championships gold medalist, and 2024 World Indoor Championships silver medalist.
