The 10km world record holder Yalemzerf Yehualaw won the women’s London Marathon and recorded her first major marathon victory at the age of 23. The Ethiopian won with a time of 2:17:26, just 3 seconds slower than her personal best, which she set on her marathon debut in Hamburg in April.
Last year’s London winner Joyciline Jepkosgei (Kenya) came second in 2:18:07, while Alemu Megertu completed the Ethiopian triumph with third place in 2:18:07.
“I am so happy to win in London. I worked really hard for this race and to get the win is amazing”, said Yalemzerf Yehualaw.
Yalemzerf Yehualaw is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. She is the current world record holder in the 10 kilometers road race, sits second on the world all-time list for the half marathon, and seventh on the respective world all-time list for the marathon. Yalemzerf Yehualaw recorded the fastest-ever women’s marathon debut at the 2022 Hamburg Marathon. She won the gold at the 2020 Gdynia half-marathon team race and the 2019 Rabat half-marathon African Games.
