The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has admitted that the conditions under which the final tournament of the season in Cancun is held are not perfect. Almost all of the eight players participating in the competition expressed public dissatisfaction with the state of the court and the overall organization of the competition.
“I understand that you are not happy to be here in Cancun. I can assure you that your dissatisfaction has been heard. We understand that this is not the perfect competition, the conditions are challenging and the WTA must take responsibility for this”, said the head of the organization Steve Simon in a letter to female athletes.
The Women’s Tennis Association has been under almost constant criticism. It is no secret that the financial situation of the women’s tour is not at all good, which puts the independent existence of the association under increasing question. At the same time, a large number of women’s tournaments pass with rather low attendance, and Cancun is no exception.
The Mexican resort was chosen to host the WTA Finals at the last possible moment, and the court on which the matches are played was only completed a day before the start of the competition. Bad weather conditions in recent days have further worsened the situation surrounding the tournament.
