Women’s basketball Team USA improved its record with a 27th straight World Cup victory

Kelsey Plum scored 20 points and Chelsea Gray added 16 points to lead Team USA to a 121-59 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Women’s Basketball World Cup. Thus, the team broke its own record for consecutive World Cup victories, achieving its 27th win.

The team has not lost since the semi-final against Russia in 2006. Before that, Team USA had 26 victories in the period 1994-2006. The Soviet Union held the world record with 56 consecutive victories from 1959 to 1986.

The Americans won all of their group games by an average margin of 46.2 points.

Team USA fell short of their record of 145 points, but the victory was impressive enough, leading 33-15 in the 10th minute and then 63-31 at the break.

The American team was missing Jewell Loyd, who had a rest. Kahleah Copper started in her place and finished with 11 points.

Nikolina Elez was the top scorer for the Bosnian women with 19 points.

In another game Tuesday, Puerto Rico beat Korea Republic by 92-73 to advance to its first quarterfinal. China defeated Belgium by 81-55 for second place in the group. Canada will play Mali, France face Serbia and Australia face Japan.
