Kenyan-born Bahrain athlete Winfred Yavi will make her first start of the Diamond League summer season in Eugene on Saturday. The reigning world champion and Diamond league winner in the 3,000m steeplechase will be chasing a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Winfred Yavi is a Kenyan-born Bahraini female athlete who specializes in the 3,000m steeplechase. She won the gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships and finished fourth at both the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships. Winfred Yavi won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games. She took bronze in the 1,500m, gold in the 5,000m and gold for the 3000m steeplechase at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships.
In Eugene, Winfred Yavi will face a Kenyan trio as competition. She will compete with world silver medalist Beatrice Chepkoech and bronze medalist Faith Cherotich, as well as the Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech.
Beatrice Chepkoech won gold medals at the 2019 World Championships and 2018 African Championships and silver medal at the 2023 World Championships. In the 1,500m, she took silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2015 African Games. She is the world record holder for the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:44.32 min set in 2018 in Monaco.
