Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) eliminated the world number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) and for the second time in her career qualified for the semi-finals of the Wimbledon women’s tennis championship.
Elina Svitolina defeated Iga Swiatek by 2-1 (7:5, 6:7, 6:2) after 2:41 hours of play and will face Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) in the semi-finals.
After winning the first set, the Ukrainian overcame a deficit from 1:3 to 4:3 in her favor in the second part. It came to a tiebreak in which Elina Svitolina led with 4-1 points, but the Polish player turned it to 7-5 and equalized the sets to 1-1. In the third set, the Ukrainian player took five consecutive games to 5:1 and successfully ended the match.
Elina Svitolina, who plays at wimbled with a wild card, reaches this stage of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time in total after two semi-finals in 2019 – at Wimbledon and at the US Open. With her success over Iga Swiatek, she beat a fourth Grand Slam champion on her way to the top 4 in London.
Iga Swiatek broke her streak of 14 victories. Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam tournament in which the Polish player did not reach the semifinals.
“Honestly, I can’t realize right now everything that’s happening. I am incredibly happy to have the opportunity to play here, to make such a match. All the time I was guided by a huge inspiration. I am very happy that I can come out as the winner of the match with the leader in the world rankings”, commented Elina Svitolina after the end of the match. “Iga is not only an incredible champion, but also an extraordinary person. She was one of the first to make her support clear and take steps to help my people. It certainly wasn’t easy for her either. I’m personally very proud of what I did”, added she.
