Victoria Hudson won a historic gold for Austria in javelin throw at the Roma European Athletics Championships

Victoria Hudson (Austria) won the women’s javelin throw gold at the Roma European Athletics Championships. The Austrian athlete achieved 64.62m, which is the only Austrian javelin throw gold in the European Championships history.

Adriana Vilagos (Serbia) earned the silver with a European under-23 season best of 64.42m, while Marie-Therese Obst (Norway) won the bronze with a personal best of 63.50m.

“I am a bit in disbelief at the moment. It is incredible, I cannot believe that I can say ‘I am a European champion’. That is really something I have dreamed of, making a medal – at any major championship. It is a dream and I am going to celebrate with my team. I could not have done it without them”, said Victoria Hudson after winning the women’s javelin throw gold. “All the hard work paid off. There has been a big shift in Austrian athletics. Normally Austrians would not be in top positions. Now Austrians start to believe in themselves. The federation is innovative and has made huge steps and in younger age groups we start to get medals”, added she.

The Top 5 in the event were completed by Christin Hussong (Germany) and Nikola Ogrodnikova (Czech Republic) with 61.92m and 61.78m, respectively.

Victoria Hudson represented her country at the 2019 World Championships, but did not qualify for the final. She also competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
