Russian tennis player Veronika Kudermetova qualified for the semifinals of the women’s tennis tournament WTA 1000 Roma Open with a prize pool of 7.7 million EUR. Her opponent in the match for the final will be Anhelina Kalinina (Ukraine).
The 11th-seeded Veronika Kudermetovadefeated Qinwen Zheng (China) after a comeback with 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:4) in a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes. The Russian led by 3:0 after the break at the start of the decisive third set and did not lose her lead until the end.
Veronika Kudermetova reached the semi-finals at WTA 1000 Madrid Open earlier this month and since the beginning of the season has two more semis at the WTA 500 Qatar TotalEnergies Open and WTA 500 Adelaide International 2. So far, she has one WTA title at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open in 2021.
The Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina, who is 30th-seeded, ousted 12th-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil) by 2-1 (6:7, 7:6, 6:3) after also trailing by a set at the start. The match lasted 3 hours and 50 minutes, making it the longest on the WTA tour this season. The match offered a great drama for the spectators. Beatriz Haddad Maia took a 3:0 lead in the third set, but lost the next six games and thus, the Ukrainian player took the victory.
Anhelina Kalinina has won one singles title on the WTA Challenger Tour as well as 15 singles titles and three doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. On March 20, 2023, she reached her career-high singles ranking of world No 28. In June 2022, she became the No. 1 Ukrainian tennis player.
