Russian tennis player Veronika Kudermetova has announced that she will remove the logo of her Russian sponsor Tatneft from her team in order to compete at Wimbledon this year.
Wimbledon banned the participation of tennis players from Russia and Belarus a year ago because of the invasion of the Russian army in Ukraine, but this year will allow them to participate under a neutral flag.
Veronika Kudermetova‘s sponsor is an oil and gas company that was sanctioned by the European Union last June.
“I’m thinking about Wimbledon. It’s not allowed to play with a logo from Russia, I know that”, said Veronika Kudermetova at the tournament in Madrid.
She will play versus 9th-seeded American tennis player Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of the Masters’ tournament WTA 1000 Madrid Open and is one of the players who have already signed personal declarations that they will participate as neutrals in the London tournament.
“If I want to play at Wimbledon, I have to remove the logo”, admitted Veronika Kudermetova.
