Veronika Kudermetova is out of the WTA 500 San Diego Open

The 6th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova (Russia) is out of the WTA 500 San Diego Open tennis tournament after losing in the first round to Sofia Kenin (USA) by 0-2 (4:6, 4:6) in 1:26 hours of play. Thus, the Russian tennis player continue with her hesitant performance last months after dropping out in first or second round in the last five tournaments.

Sofia Kenin definitely was the better on the court, breaking once her opponent in the first set and saving only one breakpoint.

In the second set Veronika Kudermetova had a great chance after breaking her opponent in the 6th game and took a lead of 4:2. However, Sofia Kenin returned the break immediately and won the next three games to close the set again on 6:4.

In the next round, the American tennis player will face her compatriot Katie Volynets.

Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) also advanced to the second round after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia) by 2-1 (7:6, 6:7, 7:5) in a match that lasted 2:50 hours. The Russian tennis placed saved a match point in the second set, but finally lost. In the next round the Latvian tennis player will face Danielle Collins (USA), who defeated Louisa Chirico (USA) by 2-0 (7:5, 6:0).

The Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk goes ahead at the WTA 500 San Diego Open after defeating Magda Linette (Poland) by 2-0 (6:2, 7:6) and will face Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil), who eliminated Leylah Fernandez (Canada) by 2-1 (6:3, 5:7, 6:2).

Sloane Stephens (USA) defeated Elise Mertens (Belgium) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3) and also advanced to the second round.
