Veronica Shanti Pereira made history as the first athlete from Singapore to win a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships. The Singaporean athlete won the gold in the 100m with 11.20 sec and improved her own national record in the event.
Before the 26-year-old Veronica Shanti Pereira achievement, the best performance by a Singaporean athlete at such a forum was by Rachel Yang, who has silver in the pole vault in 2007. She then became the first Singaporean athlete to medal at the Asian Athletics Championships.
“That was crazy. I didn’t know the score because I didn’t turn to see the scoreboard. I was just waiting for the announcer to announce it”, said Veronica Shanti Pereira after her gold medal.
Veronica Shanti Pereira is a Singaporean track and field athlete who specializes in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay. She holds the 100m national record (11.20 sec), 200m Southeast Asian Games record (22.69 sec), and 200m Asian Athletics Championships record (22.70 sec)
