UEFA investigates Republic of Ireland players for singing a song referencing the IRA

UEFA has launched an investigation into Republic of Ireland players for singing a song referencing the IRA after the Greens reached the finals of their first Women’s World Cup, said the European football’s governing body on Thursday.

A video posted on social media after the Irish women’s play-off win over Scotland by 1-0 on Tuesday showed the team chanting a slogan in support of the paramilitary Irish Republican Army (IRA), which seeks to end British rule in Northern Ireland.

Ireland manager Vera Pauw and the country’s Football Association (FAI) apologized for the incident.

The Republic of Ireland qualified for the Women’s World Cup after defeating Scotland with 1-0 after a goal of Amber Barrett in the 72nd minute.
