Two-time world champion Fiona May will be the ambassador of the Rome European Athletics Championships

The 1995 and 2001 world long jump champion Fiona May has been named ambassador for the European Athletics Championships in Rome from June 7-12. Following her retirement from competitive athletics in 2005, Fiona May remains strongly involved with the sport and looks forward to playing an important role in the upcoming institutional initiatives and communications activities to promote the championships.

“It is an honor for me to be the ambassador of the European Athletics Championships in Rome. I am really excited to participate in the event with such an important role. It will be great to share this incredible experience with the new champions of Italian and international athletics”, said Fiona May.

In her career, Fiona May also has two Olympic silver medals in the long jump, as well as bronze and silver at the 1994 and 1998 Continental Outdoor Championships.

She still holds the Italian women’s long jump record of 7.11m. Fiona May achieved this mark at the 1988 European Championships, where she won the silver medal behind Heike Drechsler.

Fiona May’s passion for athletics and long jump has been successfully passed on to her daughter Larissa Iapichino, who is following in her footsteps and last winter won her first women’s medal – silver at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.
