The two-time Olympic champion Tiril Eckhoff (Norway) is another star in women’s biathlon, who announced her retirement from the sport in the last two days. Such a decision has already been taken by the winner of the 2022 World Cup, Marte Olsbu Roiseland (Norway), Denise Herrmann-Wick (Germany), and Anais Chevalier-Bouchet (France).
Tiril Eckhoff, 32, missed the entire season, which ends this weekend in Holmenkollen, because of the severe consequences of coronavirus infection.
“It’s a bit sad to end my career now, but at the same time, I believe it’s the right decision. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and I’ll always look back with a smile on my years in biathlon”, said Tiril Eckhoff.
The Norwegian won the sprint and pursuit at the end of the season in March 2022 in Oslo and then contracted the coronavirus at the party there. She said she has suffered from insomnia ever since and still needs medical attention.
Tiril Eckhoff won gold in the medley relay at the Sochi 2014 and Beijing 2022 Olympics and has six other Winter Olympics medals in her career. She has also won 15 World Championship medals, 10 of them gold. She also won the World Cup in 2021.
“After many illnesses and a difficult year, I feel that I lack motivation. I experienced different sensations, but I do not find the right direction to set new goals”, added also Tiril Eckhoff.
