European indoor high jump champion from Torun 2021 Yaroslava Mahuchikh will defend her title in Istanbul after reaching the final in Turkey in heartbreaking fashion. The Ukrainian was about to fall at the very first height of 1.87m after making two fouls. The Olympic and World medalist decided to skip her third attempt at this height and went to 1.91m, where she managed to secure a place on her way to the finals. Two more of her compatriots will be there – world medalist Yuliya Levchenko and Kateryna Tabashnyk.
“It was the most nerve-racking qualification of my life. I started with two vaults and I was like, ‘Hey, you’ve got to start jumping properly.’ I’m so sorry for my fans and my coach that it was so nerve-wracking”, shared the Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh after the happy development for her in the end.
However, the women’s high jump qualification was not without surprises – European silver medalist Marija Vukovic from Montenegro and Italian Elena Vallortigara, world bronze medalist, dropped out of the battle for honors.
