Top seeds Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka are out of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open

The top-seeded Paula Badosa (Spain) and the 2nd-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) were eliminated in the second round of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open in Mexico, with a prize fund of 2.527 million USD.

Paula Badosa withdrew due to illness after losing the first set 2:6 to former world number one Victoria Azarenka (Belarus). Thus, for a place in the quarterfinals, Victoria Azarenka will play against the 13th-seeded Madison Keys (USA), who had a hard victory versus the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:3).

Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, who has been in excellent form lately, eliminated the 2nd-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (6:4, 2:6, 6:2) and recorded her 20th win in her last 22 matches. Liudmila Samsonova achieved her first victory over a tennis player from the Top 5. She will play in the third round against Marie Bouzkova (Czech Republic), who eliminated Colombian Camila Osorio by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1).

Sloane Stephens (USA) achieved her first top-20 success of the year after beating Olympic champion and world No 14 Belinda Bencic (Switzerland) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4). Sloane Stephens’ opponent for a place in the quarterfinals will be 6th-seeded Caroline Garcia (France).

In the other matches of the second-round results in WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open, Veronika Kudermetova (Russia) defeated Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-0 (6:4, 7:5), while Jessica Pegula (USA) defeated Elena Rybakina by 2-1 (2:6, 6:3, 7:6).

Caroline Garcia (France) and Cori Coco Gauff (USA) qualified for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) finals in Fort Worth (USA) at the end of the month. At 18 years and 239 days, Roland Garros runner-up Cori Coco Gauff will make her WTA Finals debut, becoming the youngest competitor since 2005 when Russia’s Maria Sharapova reached the semi-finals at 18 years and 208 days.
