The top seeds Sorana Cirstea, Alycia Parks, and Greet Minnen dropped out in the first round of the WTA 250 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. All the top players in the tournament lost their opening match in the hard court indoor tournament with a prize pool of 259,303 USD.
The top-seeded Sorana Cirstea (Romania), who is world’s No 33, lost in the first round of the tennis tournament to Eva Lys (Germany) by 0-2 (6:3, 6:3) in 74 minutes of play.
The German tennis player started the match strongly, making two breaks to lead by 5:2. Sorana Cirstea returned one break, but in her serve Eva Lys made her third break in the set to win it by 6:3. In the second set, both players exchanged a break in the start and another one in the sixth and seventh game, but finally the German player showed stronger nerves and after another break in her favor, closed the set again at 6:3.
In the next round, Eva Lys will face the winner between Jaqueline Cristian (Romania) and Celine Naef (Switzerland).
The Romanian player Elena Gabriela Ruse carried another surprise in the first round, defeating the second-seeded Alycia Parks (USA) by 2-1 (6:2, 1:6, 6:4). In the next round, the Romanian player will face Anna Bondar (Hungary), who eliminated the Ukrainian qualifier Anastasiya Soboleva after 2-1 (5:7, 6:2, 6:3).
The third-seeded Greet Minnen (Belgium) is also out of the tournament after losing to Daria Snigur (Ukraine) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2). In the second round, the Ukrainian tennis player will face Anna-Lena Friedsam (Germany), who defeated Ilona Georgiana Ghioroaie (Romania) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:1).
In the other matches of the day, Emiliana Arango (Colombia) defeated Jessika Ponchet (France) by 2-0 (6:3, 7:6), while Tamara Korpatsch (Germany) eliminated Leolia Jeanjean (France) by 2-1 (6:4, 2:6, 6:3) and the 5th-seeded Ana Bogdan (Romania) won her match versus Viktoriya Tomova (Bulgaria) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:1).
