The top-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington with a prize pool of 780,637 USD.
Jessica Pegula, who is the champion in Washington in 2019, eliminated another American, Peyton Stearns, in the second round by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) after an hour and 24 minutes of play and will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Two breaks were enough for Jessica Pegula in the first set, and in the second the rivals exchanged a total of seven breaks.
“I definitely want to win the tournament again. That’s exactly why I’m here. But this is my first tournament on hard courts in a while. I want to keep improving my game”, said Jessica Pegula.
Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) also advanced to the quarterfinals, eliminating the 2nd-seeded Caroline Garcia (France) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3). The match lasted 65 minutes. Marta Kostyuk awaits a match against 8th-seeded and former champion Liudmila Samsonova (Russia).
