The world’s number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) overcame the first round of the Australian Open. The Polish tennis player eliminated the 2020 Melbourne champion Sofia Kenin (USA) by 2-0 (7:6, 6:2) in nearly two hours of play.
The two had not met since the quarterfinals of Roland Garros 4 years ago. Iga Swiatek twice fell behind with a break in the first set, but managed to reach a tiebreak in which she did not leave any chances to her opponent.
The second set was completely dominated by the Polish tennis player. She is on a 17-fight winning streak.
Iga Swiatek will face the winner between Danielle Collins, who eliminated Angelique Kerber (Germany).
Daria Kasatkina had a hard time with Peyton Stearns (USA), but she won by 2-1 (6:2, 3:6, 6:2) and in the second round she will face another American – Sloane Stephens. The US Open champion in 2017, Sloane Stephens, prevailed by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) over wild card player Olivia Gadecki (Australia). It was her first win in Melbourne since 2019.
Martina Trevisan (Italy) eliminated Renata Zarazúa (Mexico) in three sets to win by 2-1 (4:6, 6:4, 6:2), while her compatriot Elisabetta Cocciaretto eliminated the Swiss qualified Lulu Sun by 2-0 (6:1, 7:5).
The 27th-seeded Emma Navarro (USA) and the 18th-seeded Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) also advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after defeating in three-sets Xiyu Wang (China) and Camila Giorgi (Italy), respectively
