The 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan has not been included in Nigeria’s squad for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, which starts next week and runs until August 27. The reason why she did not make the team is the accusation against her by the Clean Athletics Council for three missed doping tests within 12 months. She is threatened with deprivation of racing rights for two years because of the missed inspections.
The Nigerian team include Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medalist in long jump Ese Brume.
At the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA, Nigeria placed 13th with one gold and one silver.
Tobi Amusan won the gold medal for Nigeria in the women’s 100m hurdles while Ese Brume won silver in the long jump.
Oluwatobiloba Ayomide “Tobi” Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specializes in the 100m hurdles and also competes as a sprinter. She is the current World, Commonwealth and African champion in the 100m hurdles, as well as the meet record holder in those three competitions. Tobi Amusan became the first ever Nigerian world champion and world record holder in an athletics event when she won the 2022 World Championships 100m hurdles gold medal, setting the current world record of 12.12 sec (+0.9m/s) in the semi-final, followed up by a 12.06 sec (+2.5m/s) in the final. She won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100m hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion in the event. She is also the current Diamond league champion in the 100m hurdles having won the final in 12.29 sec (-0.3m/s) winning back to back titles in 2022 and 2023.
