Tobi Amusan: I didn’t expect to set a world record, the goal was the gold

New 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, who also won the world title at the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships with 12.06s (2.5m/s), said she did not expect to set a world record at the championships. The Nigerian athlete did so in the semi-final heat, finishing first in 12.12s (0.9m/s).

“The goal was to go out and win that gold. I just did it. To be honest, I believe in my abilities, but I did not expect to set a world record at this championship”, said the gold medalist after her success.

Amusan finished fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last year as well as at the 2019 World Athleitcs Championships in Doha.

Oluwatobiloba Ayomide “Tobi” Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specializes in the 100m hurdles and also competes as a sprinter. She was the 2018 Commonwealth and 2018 African champion and is also a two-time African Games champion in the event. Tobi Amusan won the Diamond League Trophy in Zurich in 2021 in the 100m hurdles.
