Ethiopian athlete Tigist Ketema won the 50th edition of the Berlin Marathon, which took place on Sunday in the streets of the German capital.
The podium was occupied entirely by representatives of Ethiopia. Tigist Ketema finished with a time of 2:16.42 hours, more than two minutes ahead of her compatriot Mestawut Fikir, who took the second place. Bosena Mulatie finished third.
A record 58,212 runners from 161 countries around the world took part in the Berlin Marathon.
Tigist Ketema is an Ethiopian track and field athlete. In 2023, she ran the fastest ever debut marathon time by a woman. On January 7, 2024 she won the 2024 Dubai Marathon, finishing the race in 2:16:07 hours. Earlier in her career, Tigist Ketema was a bronze medalist at the World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2016 over 800m. She became national champion in 2016 at that distance, and in June 2017 won gold at the 2017 African U20 Championships in Athletics over 800m in Tlemcen, Algeria.
