The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said the 3×3 basketball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics was a “huge success”.
Thomas Bach and the Secretary-General of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Andreas Zagklis were in the stands and watched today’s finals for men and women.
“Holding the 3×3 basketball tournament at the Olympics is a huge success. Congratulations to all the teams”, said Thomas Bach.
The 3×3 basketball (pronounced three-ex-three) is a variation of basketball played three-a-side, with one backboard and in a half-court setup. According to an ESSEC Business School study commissioned by the International Olympic Committee, 3×3 is the largest urban team sport in the world.
The 3×3 basketball debuted in the program of the Olympic Games. The decision to include this sport was made by the International Olympic Committee in June 2017.
