The volleyball players from the national team of the Republic of Korea practically qualified for the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament in Tokyo 2020. The Koreans defeated the hosts from Japan very hard and dramatically with 3-2 (25:19, 19:25, 25:22, 15:25, 16:14) in their 4th match of Group A of the tournament.
Thus, the Republic of Korea is in 3rd place in the standings in the group with 7 points after 3 wins and 1 loss, thus stamping its continuation to the quarterfinals of the Olympics. The Japanese are on 5th place with 4 points after 1 win and 3 losses, as is the 4th Dominican Republic, but with 5 points, still retaining minimal chances to qualify for the eliminations. In their last group matches, the Koreans will play the Rio 2016 Olympic runners-up from Serbia, who are second, while Japan is in a direct dispute for the quarterfinals against the Dominicans. The matches are on Monday (August 2).
A great match for the Republic of Korea made the captain and star of team Kim Yeon-koung, who scored 30 points (3 blocks, 42% efficiency in attack and 48% positive reception) for the victory.
For the team of Japan Sarina Koga scored 27 points (1 block and 37% efficiency in attack), and Mayu Ishikawa scored another 23 points (2 blocks, 38% efficiency in attack and 74% positive reception), but their efforts proved insufficient to win.
