Three of the top-seeded players were eliminated in the second round of the WTA 250 Tennis in the Land in Cleveland (USA) with a prize fund of 251,750 USD.
The top-seeded Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) lost to the American Bernarda Pera with 0-2 (4:6, 1:6) in 89 minutes. Bernarda Pera, who is ranked 51st in the world, broke four times the Czech Barbora Krejcikova and took eight of the last nine games of the match to book her place in the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old American won the last two tournaments she participated in, WTA 250 Hamburg European Open and WTA 250 Hungarian Grand Prix, and was the runner-up of the WTA 125 Thoreau Tennis Open.
The second-seeded Martina Trevisan of Italy withdrew from her match against China’s Zhang Shuai due to a muscle injury in her left thigh.
The third-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia) was defeated by Madison Brengle (USA) by 2-1 (6:3, 5:7, 5:7) in 2:07 hours. Ekaterina Alexandrova served twice for the match in the second set.
The only remaining top-seeded are Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus (seventh) and Alize Cornet of France (eighth).
