Reigning 3000m steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech opened the year with a 5000m victory in Nairobi. Beatrice Chepkoech prevailed convincingly with 15:22.05 min. The world silver medalist in the steeplechase demonstrated excellent form.
“I chose to run the 5000m because it’s still early in the season and I decided I needed to work on my speed endurance on the way to the Olympics. I am happy with my result, as it was my first race of the season”, said Beatrice Chepkoech.
Last season, the Kenyan athlete returned to the track after an injury and had a season of mixed emotions. At the World Championships in Budapest, she finished second to Kenyan-born and competing for Bahrain Winfred Yawi. Also finished second at the Diamond League Finals in Eugene.
Beatrice Chepkoech will now turn her efforts indoors, with her next competition in Torun on February 6. There she will start in the 1500m, where she will compete with the Ethiopian sisters Diribe Welteji and Freweyni Hailu.
