Arsenal women’s football team miraculously escaped a horrific incident at Wolfsburg Airport after the team’s plane caught fire as it attempted to take off. There were no injuries and everyone was evacuated.
On Sunday, the London club’s women visited Wolfsburg in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals. Immediately after the match, the English delegation was supposed to fly to the United Kingdom on a 19:30 flight.
As it approached the runway, one of the plane’s engines burst into flames. The pilots reacted quickly by stopping and an evacuation was quickly carried out, after which the fire was extinguished.
The airport revealed that the cause of the accident was a bird attack that got into the engine. The plane in question belongs to a Maltese airline and is not the one that the Arsenal men’s team flies on.
Arsenal women’s football team were accommodated in a hotel and today they returned safely to London. The match in question ended 2-2 after Ewa Pajor (19′) and Sveindís Jane Jonsdottir (24′) gave an advantage to the hosts, but Rafaelle Souza (45′) and Stina Blackstenius (69′) equalized.
