An early goal of Stefanie van der Gragt brought the victory to the Netherlands in their first match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Dutch national women’s football team defeated Portugal by the minimum 1-0 and started successfully their participation at the competition.
The 2019 runners-up opened their account for the tournament when Stephanie van der Gragt directed her header into the right corner. The goal was initially ruled out, but after VAR checking the referee confirmed it.
The Netherlands had a total of 12 goal attempt against 2 for their opponent. Sherida Spitse and Jackie Groenen made a strong match for the Netherlands. Although Portugal were offering very little in attack, they were still in the contest at 1-0, and they had a good chance to equalise in the 83rd minute when substitute Telma Encarnação cut inside and fired a shot straight at Daphne van Domselaar.
In the other matches from the day, Sweden defeated South Africa by 2-1, while France and Jamaica made a goalless draw.
