The ISU considers gradual raising of the age limit in figure skating

The Council of the International Skating Union (ISU) has supported the gradual raising of the age limit in figure skating.

Currently, only athletes who have turned 15 at the beginning of the season are eligible to participate in the World Championships and the Olympic Games. At the end of 2021, the Norwegian Figure Skating Federation proposed raising the limit to 16-17 years.

“In order to protect the physical and mental health of skaters, it is necessary to gradually increase the age limit for entry for men and women from 15 to 17”, said a source at the International Headquarters.

Over 80% of the surveyed athletes and coaches are in favor of raising the age limit, but a small number of respondents took part in the survey.

The ISU members have supported the idea of gradually raising the age restrictions ahead of the 2023-2024 season. According to the proposal, any figure skater who participates in major events in 2023, including the European and World Championships, would be allowed to remain at senior level for the 2023-2024 season – even if they do not meet the age criteria.
