Jelena Ostapenko Roland Garros

The 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) was eliminated in the second round of the French Open tennis championship. The 17th-seeded Latvian lost to Peyton Stearns (USA) by 1-2 (3:6, 6:1, 2:6) in 1:43 hours of play.

The 21-year-old American, who made her debut at Roland Garros, dominated the first and third sets, in which she led 5:1 each, which turned out to be decisive for the final success. Peyton Stearns, who is world’s No 69, won a match against a top-20 player for the first time in her career.

Elina Svitolina (Ukraine), a former world’s No 3, won a second straight match on her return to Paris. The three-time quarterfinalist in the competition overcame a bad start and made a comeback against qualifier Storm Sanders after 2-1 (2:6, 6:3, 6:1).

The 3rd-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) also advances to the third round after eliminating Camila Giorgi after retiring of the the Italian player in the second round due to a right knee injury. Camila Giorgi reached the fourth round for the first time at last season’s French Open, where Jessica Pegula made her first quarter-final.

The next opponent of Jessica Pegula will be Elise Mertens (Belgium), who eliminated Camila Osorio (Colombia) after 2-0 (6:3, 7:6). Interestingly, Elise Mertens has reached the third round of Roland Garros in each of her seven appearances at the tournament so far, but has never gone past the fourth round.

Anastasia Potapova (Russia) also advances to the third round after defeating Mayar Sherif (Egypt) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:4, 6:1), as well as her compatriot Anna Blinkova, who served one of the surprises of the day, eliminating the 5th-seeded Caroline Garcia after 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 7:5).
