Team Italy defeated Germany and eliminated them from the Billie Jean King Cup, the unofficial women’s world team tennis championship, in Seville, Spain.
Martina Trevisan defeated Eva Lys by 2-0 (7:6, 6:1) in 2:10 hours of play, while Jasmine Paolini did not allowed a surprise and won her match versus Anna-Lena Friedsam by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) to ensure the win for her team.
In the doubles match, Lucia Bronzetti and Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam and Laura Siegemund by 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 11:9) to form the final 3-0 for Team Italy, which qualified for the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup.
Team Germany is out of the tournament, although they have one more match versus France. Only the winners of the four groups qualify for the semi-finals and Team Italy already has two wins.
Germany has two trophies from the competition, the last of which was in 1992.
