England qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup final after beating Australia by 3-1 https://www.femisports.com/england-qualified-for-the-fifa-womens-world-cup-final-after-beating-australia-by-3-1/ https://www.femisports.com/england-qualified-for-the-fifa-womens-world-cup-final-after-beating-australia-by-3-1/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2023 17:10:38 +0000 http://www.femisports.com/?p=10190 England beat hosts Australia by 3-1 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final played in front of over 75,000 at Sydney Stadium. The goals for the “lionesses” were scored by Ella Ann Toone (36′), Lauren Hemp (71′) and Alessia Russo (86′), while Samantha Kerr (63′) scored for the Australians. Thus, England qualified for the grand final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they will face Spain.

The match started evenly, as both teams did not want to take any chances and waited for the opponent to make a mistake, and in the first half hour there were not many scoring opportunities. In the 36th minute, however, the English women struck their blow. After taking a touch from the left, Alessia Russo broke through well and played a pass into the Australian penalty area, with the ball falling to Ella Ann Toone, who with a great right-footed shot left home goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold no chance and England took a lead for 1-0.

The Australians tried to respond, as a few minutes later Katrina-Lee Gorry shot from distance, but England keeper Mary Earps saved. The home team continued to struggle to create chances in front of the English goal in the second half. In the 58th minute, the “lionesses” could have doubled their lead after a corner kick, but Millie Bright’s header was inaccurate. This is how it came to the 63rd minute, when after a good counterattack by Australia, their big star Samantha Kerr advanced with the ball and scored a great goal with a long shot, which equalized – 1-1.

England rallied immediately and could have quickly regained the lead after Lauren Hamp crossed well from the left in the 70th minute to find Alessia Russo who headed in, but her shot went inches wide of the goal. A minute later, however, after a long ball into the home penalty area by Millie Bright, the Australians’ Ellie Carpenter didn’t make a good tackle and Lauren Hemp capitalized on her mistake to knock the ball into the net – 2-1 for England!

Australian players immediately tried to press to get the goal back. First, Samantha Kerr headed wide from close range in the 83rd minute, and shortly after, Cortnee Vine shot but England goalkeeper Mary Earps saved. Two minutes later, Samantha Kerr again made a great miss, after taking a corner, the ball fell to her, but her volley from the small penalty area did not find the English goal.

The “lionesses” took advantage of these mistakes, who decided everything in the match literally in the next minute. After a good counter-attack, Lauren Hemp found Alessia Russo, who with a measured right-footed shot made it 3-1 for England in the 86th minute and brought tears to the Australian and home fans at Sydney Stadium.

So England will face Spain in the grand final on Sunday. For both teams, it will be a historic moment, as neither of them have reached the final phase of the FIFA Women’s World Cup before. For Australia, the fight for the bronze medals remains, where they will meet the Swedish team.

Spain reached their historic first FIFA Women’s World Cup final https://www.femisports.com/spain-reached-their-historic-first-fifa-womens-world-cup-final/ https://www.femisports.com/spain-reached-their-historic-first-fifa-womens-world-cup-final/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2023 22:27:00 +0000 http://www.femisports.com/?p=10181 Spain reached their historic first FIFA Women’s World Cup final after recording a dramatic 2-1 win over Sweden in their dramatic semi-final in Auckland, Australia. Salma Paralluelo and Olga Carmona Garcia scored for Spain, while Rebecka Blomqvist scored for Sweden.

As expected, Spain dominated the first half and Sweden preferred to defend. However, the clearest position before the end of the first half was for Sweden. In the 42nd minute, Catalina Coll had to intervene on Fridolina Rolfo’s shot, which was also the only accurate shot in the first half. In the second half, Spain continued with its pressure, and in the 70th minute, Alba Maria Redondo Ferrer could have scored, but fell to the ground just in front of the goal, she made an inaccurate shot.

The last ten minutes of regular time proved to be extremely dramatic and exciting. In the 81st, Salma Paralluelo opened the scoring in favor of the Spanish women. The goal could have been canceled due to a passive offside by Eva Maria Navarro, but VAR judged that she did not influence the situation. In the 88th minute, the Swedes still managed to equalize. Lina Hurtig then headed the ball to Rebecka Blomqvist, who volleyed in the net of the Spanish goalkeeper. Only two minutes later, however, after a corner kick, the ball reached Olga Carmona Garcia, who scored the winning goal for the Iberian women with a long shot.

Spanish women’s football team thus won its first semi-final at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and will argue for the world title in the final, which will be held in Sydney on Sunday.

The Tony Gustavsson’s team prevailed over France after taking a total of 20 penalties, with the two teams making a goalless draw in the regular time and extra time, and finally Australia won by 7-6 on penalties.

For Australia, who have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup four times, qualifying for the semi-finals is the first in history.

Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold saved three penalties against France, but she missed her own penalty shot in the dramatic conclusion to the quarter-final clash in Brisbane. The decisive penalty was scored by Cortnee Vine.

The French women played a better first half and had a chance to win in extra time, but failed to convert. In the ninth penalty for France, Kenza Dali missed, and the execution was repeated after a review of the situation with VAR, and Mackenzie Arnold again did not allow a goal. Clare Hunt’s shot for Australia was then saved to make it 10 runs from the penalty spot for each of the teams.

Sweden beat Japan by 2-1 in the quarter-final match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup https://www.femisports.com/sweden-beat-japan-by-2-1-in-the-quarter-final-match-of-the-fifa-womens-world-cup/ https://www.femisports.com/sweden-beat-japan-by-2-1-in-the-quarter-final-match-of-the-fifa-womens-world-cup/#respond Fri, 11 Aug 2023 23:50:00 +0000 http://www.femisports.com/?p=10097 Sweden beat Japan by 2-1 in the quarter-final match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup played in Auckland, New Zealand. The goals for Sweden were scored by Amanda Ilestedt (32′) and Filippa Angeldal (51′ – penalty), and Honoka Hayashi (87′) was accurate for the Japanese women. Thus, the Scandinavian women dethroned another of the favorites in the tournament, after they eliminated the USA in the Round of 16 after a penalty shootout.

The match started evenly, but the Swedes were the first to strike in the 32nd minute when Amanda Ilestedt was accurate after a scramble to open the scoring for 1-0. The second half started in a very good position for Sweden, as in the 47th minute Johanna Rytting Kaneryd shot dangerously, but Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita was able to clear for a corner. Four minutes later, however, Fuka Nagano played with a hand in her penalty area and after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which was converted into a goal by Filippa Angeldal in the 51st minute for 2-0 for Sweden.

The Japanese tried to respond, winning a penalty in turn, but it was missed by substitute Riko Ueki in the 76th minute, who aimed the crossbar at Swedish keeper Zecira Musovic. Ten minutes later, Aoba Fujino’s free-kick also hit Sweden’s crossbar as the ball traveled over the goal line but never found the back of the net. However, in the 87th minute, Japan reduced the score to 1-2 with a goal by another reserve – Honoka Hayashi. A long 10-minute extension was also given, during which, however, the Swedes managed to maintain their lead.

Thus, Sweden will play in the semi-finals with the Spanish women’s national football team, who earlier in the day defeated the Netherlands 2-1 after extra time.

The Swedes continue to be undefeated at the World Cup, while for the impressive so far Japan, it was the first, but it cost them their place in the tournament.

The match was extremely contested, as in the regular time of the match the two teams exchanged a total of 12 scoring chances, and even in the 37th minute, Jennifer Hermoso sent the ball into the Netherlands’ net, but after reviewing the situation through the VAR system, the goal was disallowed.

In the 81st minute, luck was on the side of the Spanish women and referee Stephanie Frappart pointed to the penalty spot. The execution of the penalty was carried out by Mariona Caldentey, who was flawless and sent her teammates into wild joy for 1-0.

The happiness was too short-lived and the Dutch equalized in the first minute of stoppage time when Stefanie van der Gragt revived hopes of a turnover.

Thus, the match was sent to a new phase of two overtime periods of 15 minutes each. There, the Spanish women found the way to the opponent’s goal for the third time and reached the final success after Salma Celeste Paralluelo Ayingono’s goal in the 111th minute.

Mariona Caldentey was named the player of the match, but Teresa Abelleira Duenas and Jennifer Hermoso made strong match for the winners.

Thus, in the semi-finals Spain will face the winner between Japan and Sweden, who will play later today.

Just five minutes later, it was the striker who assisted Kenza Dali to score the second goal for the team. In the 23rd minute, Kadidiatou Diani also forced Nesryne El Chad into a foul, after which Eugenie Le Sommer sent the ball into the net with a low shot.

In the second half, the French women scored just one more goal, and it was also the work of Eugenie Le Sommer, who headed in a cross from substitute Vicki Becho in the 70th minute.

The match was also notable for being the first official clash between the two teams. The only goal for the South Americans fell at the beginning of the second half and was the work of Catalina Usme (51′).

Colombian girls started the match well and only managed to increase their advantage as time went on. The first dangerous shot was the work of Rebecca Spencer, but it did not create a serious danger for the representatives of the Caribbean island. On the other side, Catalina Perez Jaramillo stood with almost nothing to do.

The Colombian women realized their advantage six minutes into the second half, when a long pass from the left zone found Catalina Usme completely uncovered in the penalty area, and she had no problem scoring the only goal of the match. It was only then that the Jamaican girls stepped up and tried to get an equalizer, but it never came and their best chance was missed by Jody Brown.

Thus, Colombia reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they will face England, who yesterday defeated Nigeria after penalties. The two teams will meet in Sydney.
