Sydney McLaughlin won the gold medal at 400m hurdles setting a new world record

American Sydney McLaughlin won the gold medal at 400m hurdles setting a new world record of 51.46 seconds. The American runner made a very strong last 50 meters, which brought her success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“I can’t think of it yet. But I am sure that I will succeed and I will celebrate later. I’m very happy. What a great race”, said Sydney McLaughlin after the final. “The run didn’t start well until the seventh hurdle. I just wanted to go out and do my best. I am grateful to be here and to celebrate this extraordinary competition, to represent my country. I saw Dalilah Muhammad in front of me. I just thought: Run your run”, added she.

Her main competitor and compatriot Dalilah Muhammad – the current world and former Olympic champion – remained second with the silver medal with a time of 51.58 seconds.

Her result was also below the old world record. Dutchwoman Femke Bol, who finished third, improved the European record with 52.03 seconds.
