Switzerland beat Australia by 2-0 to claim its first women’s Billie Jean Cup team tennis title in Glasgow, Scotland. The Swiss women, who are runners-up from last season, won both singles matches and the doubles match was not played.
First, Jil Teichmann defeated Storm Sanders by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:3) in 2:27 hours. In the decisive third part after 2:2, Jil Teichmann made two breaks and closed the match with his first match point.
In the second match, the Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020 Belinda Bencic easily defeated Ajla Tomljanovic by 2-0 (6:2, 6:1) in 78 minutes. Belinda Bencic has not lost a set since the start of the competition.
Switzerland has not won a trophy in the tournament, formerly known as the Fed Cup, having lost the final in 1998 and again last year. Australia is a seven-time champion, but last triumphed in 1974. The Australian women lost in the final also in 2019.
