Last season’s runners-up Switzerland advanced to the semi-finals of the Billie Jean Cup women’s team tennis tournament in Glasgow after defeating Canada in the competition’s final Group A match.
Viktorija Golubic won the first singles against Bianca Andreescu by 2-0 (2:6, 6:3, 6:4), then Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic prevailed over Leylah Fernandez by 2-0 (6:0, 7:5) to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 success before the doubles match between Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic against Leylah Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski, which was irrelevant to the eventual winner.
Thus, the Swiss women’s tennis team secured first place in the group, after beating Italy 3-0 in their first match. Canada remained in second place with just one win and one loss, and the Italy finished in the last third position without success.
In the semi-finals, the Swiss women await the winner of Group D, which will be determined tonight after the last match of the first phase of the tournament between the Czech Republic and the USA. The match is a repeat of the final of the tournament from 2018, when the Czechs triumphed by 3-0.
Great Britain and Australia will meet in the other semi-final.
