Swedish swimming star Sarah Sjostrom takes a break until the end of the year

Swedish swimming star Sarah Sjostrom will miss the FINA World Cups for the rest of the year and the 25m World Championships to prepare for the 2023 World 50m Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The 29-year-old world record holder’s absence will be felt as she was the Overall Swimming World Cup winner in 2018 and 2019. She has 63 World Cup victories, placing her fifth on the all-time list for female swimmers. At last year’s World 25m Championships in Abu Dhabi, she won seven medals – three gold, three silver, and one bronze.

“I need an autumn with some peace and quiet before the 2023 World 50m Championships and the Olympic Games”, said Sarah Sjostrom.

Sarah Sjostrom is a Swedish competitive swimmer specializing in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She is the current world record holder in the 50-meter freestyle (long course), the 100-meter freestyle (long course), the 50-meter butterfly (long course), the 100-meter butterfly (long course), and the 4×50-meter medley relay (short course). She is a former world record holder in the 50-meter freestyle (short course), 100-meter freestyle (short course), 100-meter butterfly (short course), and 200-meter freestyle (short course). She is the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming. She won the Overall Swimming World Cup in 2017 and 2018. In 2022, she became the first swimmer representing a country from Europe to win 10 individual World Championships gold medals.
