Su-Wei Hsieh/Xinyu Wang won the 2023 Roland Garros doubles title

Su-Wei Hsieh (Taiwan) and Xinyu Wang (China) triumphed with the women’s doubles title at the French Open. The Asian women prevailed over the North American tandem Leylah Fernandez (Canada) and Taylor Townsend (USA) by 2-1 (1:6, 7:6, 6:1). The achievement is remarkable because this is only their second tournament together, having first at the Strasbourg tournament.

The match went through many twists and turnovers, but the decisive minutes came in the second set and early third set when the Asian double made a break. Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend could have come back in the fifth game, but squandered four break points and then conceded a break.

The 37-year-old Taiwanese player Su-Wei Hsieh won her fifth Grand Slam trophy. She and China’s Peng Shuai won the titles at 2014 Roland Garros, and the other three titles came at Wimbledon. And although she has not played in a Grand Slam since 2021 due to injuries, she has become a teacher and partner for 21-year-old debutant Xinyu Wang.

This is Leila Leylah Fernandez’s first appearance in a doubles final, while Taylor Townsend, in her only final to date at last year’s US Open doubles with Caty McNally, lost to Czech tennis players Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
