One of the longest unbeaten athletics world records today celebrates its 36th anniversary. It is the 209 cm high jump world record set by Bulgarian athlete Stefka Kostadinova in 1987, which is still unbeaten and stay on the top in the hall of athletics fame.
On August 30, 1987, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome (Italy), Stefka Kostadinova set a world record in the high jump, overcoming a height of 209 cm at the World Athletics Championships. The record of the then 22-year-old Stefka Kostadinova has not been improved to this day. She reaches it with 9 successful jumps. Overcoming the qualifications with 191 cm, in the final she made a total of 13 attempts, of which 9 were successful.
“I felt great and was confident that I would win”, commented Bulgarian athlete in an interview after the historical World Athletics Championships. “I think I will jump 210 cm this year”, added she in the late 1987.
Stefka Kostadinova is one of the most successful Bulgarian athletes, who is the 1996 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion, and a five-time World Indoor champion. She has been the president of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee since 2005.
