Spain smashed Switzerland by 5-1 in the first Round of 16 match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup played in Auckland. Thus, “La Furia” got up in the best way after the heavy defeat by Japan with 0-4 in the group phase. Aitana Bonmatí (5′, 36′), Alba Redondo (17′), Laia Codina (45′), Jennifer Hermoso (70′) scored for the Spanish team, and the goal for the Swiss came after an own goal by Laia Codina (11′). The Swiss had not conceded a goal so far in the championship, but today they had to take the ball out of their net 5 times.
The game got off to a flying start for Spain as Alba Redondo latched on to a cross from the left, Switzerland goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann was able to clear but Aitana Bonmati opened the scoring with a measured left-footed strike. However, the joy of the Spanish women lasted only six minutes. Laia Codina returned the ball strongly from the center to her goalkeeper Catalina Coll and scored a curious own goal – 1-1.
In the 17th minute, however, Spain took the lead again. Another cross from the left found Alba Redondo, who headed Gaelle Thalmann for 2:1. In the 36th minute, the excellently playing Aitana Bonmati made it 3-1 after another pass from the left fell to her, she made an excellent feint, with which she left the entire Swiss defense unanswered, and found the net for the third time with a technical shot. At the end of the half, the rout became complete, as after a cross from a corner and a shuffle, Laia Codina was the smartest and sent the ball into Switzerland’s goal for 4-1, with which she avenged her ridiculous own goal in the match.
In the second half, the match was mostly played out, but the Spanish women managed to score another goal through Jennifer Hermoso for the final 5-1.
Thus, after their convincing victory, Spain will face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and South Africa match in the quarter-finals.
