South Africa won the Women’s African Championship title

South Africa won the title at the Women’s African Championship (WAFCON) after two goals of Hildah Magaia in the final match versus Morocco. The match played in Rabat (Morocco) ended with a historical 2-1 win for South Africa, which brought them their maiden WAFCON title.

The first half was goalless and equal without serious advantage for some of the teams. The first goal came just after an hour of play as Jermaine Seoposenwe passed to Hildah Magaia, who has no other option except to finish and open the score. The second goal came just 8 minutes later, after the defense of Morocco opened up amid several attacks, which gave a place for counter-attacks and Hildah Magaia did not miss again and made the score 2-0.

Despite the negative result, Morocco did not concede defeat. They succeeded to reduce the result to 2-1 after a goal of Rosella Ayane in the 80th minute. After the goal, Morocco put their opponent under pressure to the end, but the defense of South Africa survived and did not allow a second goal.

Thus, South Africa won their maiden WAFCON title.

The two finalists and the teams they defeated in the semi-final (Nigeria and Zambia) have all booked their spots at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be staged in Australia and New Zealand.
