Sofia Kenin eliminated Caroline Garcia to reach the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros

Sofia Kenin (USA) eliminated the 21st-seeded and former world’s number two Caroline Garcia (France) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:3) in a match that lasted 1:27 hours. Thus, she qualified for the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros tennis tournament.

Caroline Garcia, who is quarter-finalist in 2017, made as much as 22 unforced errors against only 14 for her opponent. Meanwhile, Sofia Kenin, who is 2020 runner-up in the tournament, had the advantage of her better winners 26-23 and 81% first serve percentage, which brought her the victory.

The match started equally with both players winning their serve games. Caroline Garcia was first to reach and breakpoint of the serve of her opponent in the fourth game, but the American player reflected it and saved the game and equalized to 2:2. In the next game, Sofia Kenin received a breakpoint after five deuces, but did not missed to score it and took a lead by 3:2. She also won her serve game and kept the lead to 5:3, when Caroline Garcia served to stay in the set. However, the pressure was serious and she fell behind by 15-40. Although Sofia Kenin did not scored the first breakpoint, she made it with the second and won the set by 6:3.

The second set started in similar way with American player being the first to break for 3:1. Caroline Garcia returned immediately the break for 3:2, but Sofia Kenin broke again and kept the advance of 4:2, which proved to be enough for her to close the set at 6:3 again.

In the third round, Sofia Kenin will face the winner between the 9th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) and Clara Tauson (Denmark).

A lot of matches during the day were again interrupted by the rain, which continues disturbing the program of the tournament and delaying the matches.

Sofia Kenin has one Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2020 and is the finalist at the French Open / Roland Garros in 2020.
