Sofia Goggia won the downhill at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee

Sofia Goggia (Italy) achieved her second victory of the season in the Alpine Skiing World Cup after winning the downhill in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee (Austria). For her, this is the first victory in her crowning discipline for the campaign, in which she has had one second and one fourth place so far.

The Italian skier triumphed with a time of 1:46.47 min, which she achieved despite not being fastest in any of the five sectors of the course. However, she avoided mistakes in her riding, which allowed her to reach the victory.

Second, just 0.10 seconds behind Sofia Goggia, was the first of the home team’s representatives, Stephanie Venier, who topped the third sector but did not make the top 5 in any of the others. The third place was shared by Mirjam Puchner (Austria) and Nicol Delago (Italy), who finished with a passive of 0.34 sec behind the winner.

Nicol Delago opened the race and stayed in first place until the descent of Sofia Goggia, who was in the No 8. Her time was later matched by Mirjam Puchner, who started in the No 13, but both were surprised by Stephanie Venier, who drove the No 17.

With her victory today, Sofia Goggia extended her lead at the top of the discipline’s standings, where she has 230 points, 93 points ahead of world champion Jasmine Flury (Switzerland), who finished 11th today. The trio is formed by Mirjam Puchner, whose passive from Sofia Goggia is 99 points.

Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), who is not racing this weekend because of a cold, remains in the lead in the general standings for the World Cup. The American leads the standings with an asset of 929 points and an advance of 164 points ahead of Federica Brignone (Italy), who remained 14th in today’s downhill. Third, with a deficit of 207 points, is Petra Vlhova (Slovakia), who, like Mikaela Shiffrin, is not running this weekend. Sofia Goggia is fifth overall, 379 points behind Mikaela Shiffrin.

The women’s World Cup season continues today with the second super-giant slalom of the weekend in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. The next descent is scheduled for January 26 at the Olympia della Tofane in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy).
