Sofia Goggia will miss tomorrow’s super-giant slalom at the Beijing 2022 Olympics

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia will miss tomorrow’s super-giant slalom at the Beijing 2022 Olympics to save as much as possible for Tuesday’s downhill.

The 29-year-old Italian, who injured her leg while falling in a World Cup race in Cortina d’Ampezzo on January 23, made her first training session in China on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, she said she could not guarantee her race schedule after a difficult two weeks after the accident. Sofia Goggia did not take part in an official training session on Wednesday.

Sofia Goggia is an Italian World Cup alpine ski racer who competes in all disciplines and specializes in the speed events of downhill and super-G. At the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics, Goggia won the gold medal in the downhill, becoming the only woman to win Olympic gold for Italy in that event.

In October 2021, Goggia was named Italy’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. On January 23, 2022, Goggia suffered a knee injury after a crash in the Cortina d’Ampezzo Super-G. She immediately started physical rehab with the aim of returning in time to defend her Olympic downhill title on February 15. Goggia has traveled to Beijing aiming to take part in the speed events but pulled out from her flag-bearing duties in the opening ceremony on February 4th. She has also stated that she plans to continue her career until the 2026 Olympic Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, hosted by her home country, Italy.
