The three-time Tokyo 2020 Olympic medalist Sifan Hassan will look to repeat her gold medal success in the 5,000m and 10,000m after qualifying for both events at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (USA).
Sifan Hassan also won bronze in the 1,500m in Tokyo, but this time сhe will compete in only two events after several months out of training. She wasn’t sure which distance to combine with her beloved 5,000m.
The 29-year-old Dutch athlete has decided to start in the 10,000m on Saturday. She will then attempt a double, starting with the 5,000m heats next Wednesday. The final is on July 23 (Saturday).
Sifan Hassan is the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals across a middle-distance event and both long-distance races in a single Games. She is only the second woman to complete an Olympic distance double.
At the World Athletics Championships, she took 1,500m and 10,000m titles in 2019. She won a bronze at the 1,500m in 2015, and at the 5,000m in 2017 when she also finished fifth for the 1,500m. Sifan Hassan is a three-time World Indoor Championships medallist, winning gold at 1,500m in 2016 as well as silver at 3,000m and bronze for 1,500m in 2018.
