Sifan Hassan and Eilish McColgan will compete in the 5,000m at the London Diamond League on July 23. Earlier in the season, the organizers announced that British athletes Keely Hodgkinson, Jazmin Sawyers and Dina Asher-Smith, as well as international stars such as Femke Bol to appear at the Olympic Stadium in London.
Eilish McColgan will have to put in some serious effort if she wants to beat Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Sifan Hassan.
“I’m excited to race the track in London once again. I had a great performance on the road in London earlier in the year and enjoyed being supported by the crowd on the street, so I’m hoping for a great atmosphere again at the London Stadium in July. The transition from road short track was very easy in the first races. So I’m looking forward to seeing what I can show in the 5,000m”, said Sifan Hassan, who this spring won the London Marathon on her debut in the event.
Eilish McColgan won gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 5,000m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year and added silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m at the European Championships in Munich. In recent years, she has broken British records in all disciplines from 5,000m to half marathon.
“It’s always very special to compete in front of my home crowd and I was delighted to have the opportunity to do so twice at the Commonwealth Games last year. I’m very excited for the 5,000m next month”, said Eilish McColgan.
Eilish McColgan is a Scottish middle- and long-distance runner. She is a four-time European Championships medallist, winning silver medals for the 5,000m in 2018 and 10,000m in 2022, bronze in the 5,000m in 2022, and a bronze for the indoor 3,000m in 2017.
