Ethiopian athlete Senbere Teferi overtook Hellen Obiri to win the 10km in New York. She won in a personal best and race record of 30:12 min. The Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner, who is the 5,000m silver medalist at the 2015 World Athletics Championships, edged out two-time world 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri (Kenya) by seven seconds.
The third place was taken by the Mexican Laura Galvan Rodríguez with 31:14 min.
“It was hard. We’ve been running together since the beginning. It was extremely contested. I know the course well, so that helped me”, said Senbere Teferi after the race.
Senbere Teferi is an Ethiopian professional middle- and long-distance runner. She won the silver medal in the 5,000m at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. She was also the silver medalist at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships. She is the world record holder for the women’s only 5km road race. At age 16, Senbere Teferi earned silver in the 1,500m at the 2011 World Under-18 Championships to take bronze at the U20 edition the following year.
