Scottish ultrarunner Joasia Zakrzewski was disqualified for using a car in a race

A Scottish ultrarunner Joasia Zakrzewski was disqualified for using a car in a race. The athlete won the bronze at the 2023 GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race on April 7, but her medal was taken after it was discovered she had traveled by car for about 2.5 miles

The data from the tracking system for the 50-mile race shows that Joasia Zakrzewski, who represented Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow, used a car for about 2.5 miles of the race.

Race director Wayne Drinkwater said he had received information that a competitor had gained an advantage by unsporting means during part of the race.

“Having reviewed the data from our tracking system, we can confirm that a runner has now been disqualified from the event for taking a vehicle on part of the route”, said Wayne Drinkwater.

Scottish ultrarunner Joasia Zakrzewski justified her cheating due to feeling ill and wanted to quit after arriving from Australia the night before the race.

Third place in the race, which was held on April 7, has now been awarded to Mel Sykes.
