Ruth Chepng’etich will return to defend her Chicago Marathon title in this year’s edition. She will face this year’s London Marathon winner Sifan Hassan and US record holder Emily Sisson.
Ruth Chepng’etich triumphed in Chicago in 2022 with a time of 2:14:18 hours – just 14 seconds off the world record, becoming the second fastest woman in marathon history. The Kenyan, who has been world champion since 2019, will start in Chicago again on October 8. She also won in 2021 with a time of 2:22:31 hours. In 2023, she hopes to achieve a personal best.
“I plan to defend my title and improve my result. There is no better race than the Chicago Marathon”, said Ruth Chepng’etich.
Sifan Hassan made her debut in the London Marathon, winning his very first race in the event in 2:18:33 hours. At the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, she plans to compete on the track, and just six weeks later we will see her again on the road in Chicago.
“At the moment my focus is on the World Championships in Budapest, so my preparation for the marathon will be very short. But as most people know, I like to challenge myself. We’ll see how my body responds. The good thing is that I have experience from London, so I’m looking forward to Chicago to see what the marathon will teach me this time”, said Sifan Hassan
Unlike Sifan Hassan, Emily Sisson decided to skip the track season and focus entirely on his preparation for the Chicago Marathon. She has a 2:18:29 hours time from last year’s edition of the race.
“Chicago is where I set the US record last year. I look forward to returning for another great race in October”, said Emily Sisson.
