Reigning champion Ons Jabeur is out of the WTA 500 German Open

The last year’s champion and 4th-seeded Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) is out of the WTA 500 German Open with a prize pool of 678,814 EUR. The Tunisian player lost in the first round to Jule Niemeier (Germany) by 0-2 (6:7, 4:6) in 95 minutes.

For Jule Niemeier, this is the third success in her career against a Top 10 tennis player.

“It feels amazing. I’ve lost three sets against her in the last two years, so when I won the first set I was like, ‘At least I can play three sets again’. I was pretty positive and it’s amazing to get the win”, said the German tennis player.

The top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) and the 5th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA) also advanced to the second round, defeating the Russian qualifier Vera Zvonareva and Czech player Katerina Siniakova, respectively in straight-set victories.

The second-seeded Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) also strongly in the tournament, defeating Polina Kudermetova (Russia) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2).

The Russian players Elina Avanesyan, Anna Blinkova and Ekaterina Alexandrova also advanced ahead after defeating Daria Kasatkina (Russia), Laura Siegemund (Germany) and Liudmila Samsonova (Russia), respectively.

Jaimee Fourlis (Australia) also qualified for the second round after retiring of Xinyu Wang (China).
